Military transport aircraft enlisted for potential emergencies and deliveries to Jeju, other island regions

A second round of “pan-governmental integrated simulation” exercises for COVID-19 vaccine distribution was held on Feb. 19 at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

The scenario was for the Feb. 24 delivery of domestically produced vaccine to be shipped out of Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, to 25 vaccination centers throughout South Korea.

The test run involved a C-130 Air Force transport aircraft arriving on the runway at Seoul Air Base carrying a one-ton truck loaded with AstraZeneca vaccine. The truck was then removed directly from the airplane.

The use of military transport aircraft in the drill was intended to prepare for a scenario requiring emergency shipments, as well as a scenario where transportation via private aircraft or ship to Jeju and other islands is not possible.
