Since the Japanese government announced its decision on April 13 to dump tons of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean, the opposition to the decision has been intensifying as South Korean activist groups join forces.
The Korea Federation for Environmental Movements, calling on Japan to withdraw its decision, launched its second nationwide action campaign Thursday under the title “The ocean is not a trash can!”
The group began its campaign in front of the Seoul office of the Korea Tourism Organization with a press conference and a subsequent march. The group said it planned to organize rallies and other events at its chapters across the country, including one-person protests and press conferences.
The attendees at the press conference said, “Radioactive water, once dumped, can’t be taken back, and it will cause great damage to the fishing industry, whose livelihood depends on the ocean.”
The group’s first nationwide action campaign was held on April 28.
