China’s Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said Sunday China is calling on North Korea not to take any risks, the AP reported.
“The work we have done with North Korea is much more than what the outside world may expect,” said Liang, also a state councilor. Liang gave the remarks at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, or Asian Security Conference, organized by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore.
“We are trying to persuade them not to take risks.”
It is highly unusual for a high Chinese official to publicly demand restraint from North Korea.
Liang added that China is working privately to engage in dialogue with North Korean officials in regards to the revival of the six-party talks.

Kurt Campbell to visit Seoul this week
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell is scheduled to visit Beijing and Seoul this week to discuss the North Korean nuclear issue and the issue of food aid to North Korea.
Following a visit to Beijing on Monday, Campbell is to stop in Mongolia on Tuesday and Indonesia on Wednesday before coming to Seoul on June 10.
Campbell’s Asia visit is drawing attention in that it comes just after an effective repudiation by Pyongyang of the inter-Korean dialogue component of a framework for dialogue on the nuclear issue involving inter-Korean dialogue, U.S.-North Korea dialogue, and the six-party talks.

Deadly virus strain detected in S. Korea before European outbreak
South Korean medical doctors said Sunday that a South Korean patient in 2004 was treated for the same strain of stomach virus that has recently led to the deadly food poisoning outbreak in Europe.
Professors Bae Yoo-kyun at Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital and Jang Hee-chang at Chonnam National University Hospital said the 29-year-old woman was hospitalized after suffering stomach pains and internal bleeding.
