The National Council of Churches in Korea and North Korea’s Chosun Christian League on Sept. 25 announced a joint declaration condemning the recent revival of Japan’s ultra right and militarist movements.
The South and North Christian organizations stated that they “will make efforts to stop all Japanese plans to damage our national territory and identity by distorting history, claiming sovereignty over Dokdo, unilaterally using the name ‘Sea of Japan’, planning nuclear armament, and refusing to address the comfort women issue.”
They further stated “The churches of South and North Korea condemn Japan for its inflicting immeasurable tragedy and pain on the Korean people for 36 years by coercively adopting the Korea-Japan Annexation Treaty yet never repenting its past actions,” and asked that “Japan recognize before our people their past wrongdoings and apologize and compensate accordingly.”
The two organizations emphasized that they “will work together to stop the evil deeds by Japan” and added “we cannot accept that there are some Koreans who have forgotten the wrongdoings committed by Japan and are willing to go along with its renewed ambition to realize its Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere [an imperial vision by Japan] by reviving its militarism.”
