North Korean figure skaters Ryom Tae-ok (18) and Kim Ju-sik (25) qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang following their performance at an international competition in Oberstdorf, Germany on Sept. 29. The pair represent the first North Korean athletes to qualify for the Pyeongchang Olympics, and it is hoped that their participation will help ensure a peaceful Olympics, and a reduction of tensions in the security situation on the Korean Peninsula. The question remains, however, as to whether the North Korean government will allow Ryom and Kim to compete. North Korea boycotted the Summer Olympics when they were held in Seoul in 1988.
