A delegation from the South Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation will be visiting North Korea, while North Korean table tennis athletes will be coming to South Korea.

President Kim Hong-geol and four other representatives from the council will be staying in Pyongyang from July 16 to 19 to meet with their counterparts in North Korea and discuss promoting exchange between the South and North Korean sides of the council, South Korea’s Unification Ministry announced on July 12.

During a press conference at the end of June, Kim said he had proposed that South and North Korea set up a joint committee to facilitate the return of the remains of Koreans in various parts of Japan and had received a letter of invitation from the North Korean council to visit.

“If I end up visiting North Korea, I plan to focus my deliberations with the North Korean council on drafting a final agreement about returning the remains and on the issue of setting up an inter-Korean joint steering committee,” Kim said.

Meanwhile, the Unification Ministry announced on July 12 that it would allow 25 North Korean tennis table players to enter South Korea to participate in the World Tour Platinum Korean Open, an international table tennis tournament taking place in Daejeon from July 17 to 22. The Ministry added that the North Korean athletes would be entering South Korea via Incheon International Airport on July 12 and return to the North on July 23 after playing in the tournament.

During working-level sports talks that were held on the occasion of the inter-Korean unification football game in Pyongyang on July 5, South and North Korea reached a final agreement for the 25 North Korean athletes to take part in the tournament.
