The first South Korean guard post (GP) to be built along the inter-Korean border following the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953 will be converted into a cultural heritage site. The GP was built immediately after the armistice in 1953 along the coast of Goseong, Gangwon Province, for surveillance purposes. It has since become a symbol of the Korean War and the Cold War regime on the Korean Peninsula. In September 2018, South and North Korea agreed to conduct a probationary demolishment of 11 GPs, respectively, and to preserve one GP on each side for historical purposes.
