A project to excavate the remains of the No Gun Ri massacre was launched on July 27. The massacre was committed by U.S. soldiers in the early stages of the 1950-53 Korean War. The U.S. military reportedly shot approximately 200 Korean civilians to death at No Gun Ri, or Nogeunri, North Chuncheong Province, about 250 kilometers from Seoul. In defense of its actions, the United States has cited its concern that North Korean agents had infiltrated the civilian group, which had been displaced by the war and were in the process of fleeing to the south across U.S. military lines.
