MBC unionists hold an opening event for their general strike in the lobby of MBC headquarters in Seoul's Yeouido neighborhood, Jan. 31.
Around 400 members, including all 35 TV announcers, participated in the strike to call for MBC President Kim Jae-chul’s resignation. The union released a public apology to viewers saying, “We cannot tell the truth through MBC's main news program News Desk and the main current affairs program PD Notebook cannot play act as a true witness to our times any longer.”
“As long as President Kim does not resign, we cannot caste off the yoke of Mr. MB (President Lee Myung-bak)’s MBC,” the union‘s statement read. “We will continue to fight without retreat.”
This strike broke out 1 year and eight months after the union struck for 39 days in May of 2010 to protest Kim’s nomination.
