The Ministry of Justice’s probation and parole board has determined that Choi Eun-sun, the mother-in-law of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, qualifies for parole.
“Choi has maintained that she ‘does not wish to be the subject of controversy and public concern,’” the Justice Ministry announced, adding that Choi qualified for parole after a comprehensive review of factors such as her age, the length of her sentence, her good behavior during incarceration, her health, and recidivism risks.
Members of the board unanimously approved Choi’s release on parole on Wednesday.
Choi, 77, is currently serving a one-year sentence for forging bank records. She was up for parole during two separate reviews in April and February, but failed the subsequent screenings.
The board reviewed parole applications from 1,140 inmates on this day. Choi was among 650 who qualified for parole. Choi is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, May 14, at 10 am.
