June 4 local election candidates from the Unified Progressive Party hold a press conference in front of the government complex in Gwangju’s north district, calling for the resignation of Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Park Seung-choon and for the song “March of the Beloved” to be designated as the official song of the Gwangju Democratization Movement, Apr. 10. The citizens are arguing that the song should be sung at this year’s May 18th commemoration ceremony. Recently advertisements have been placed in the name of conservative civic groups in newspapers claiming that “March of the Beloved” is originally a North Korean song. The ads are rumored to have been sponsored by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. (Newsis)
