During the preparatory hearing for the trial of ex-president Lee Myung-bak, Lee’s attorneys denied all of the 16 corruption charges, including bribery, tax evasion and abuse of power, brought against him. Lee is suspected of embezzling KRW34.9 billion (US$32,422,100) from DAS, a private auto-parts company. He’s also been suspected of accepting bribes of over US$ 10 million from former lawmakers, bank chiefs, and businessmen. Lee was arrested in March, becoming South Korea’s fourth head of state to come under criminal prosecution. Lee was not present during the preparatory hearing, and was represented solely by his attorneys. One of the attorneys said to reporters afterwards that Lee would be present at the first hearing.
