The Apr. 3 Jeju Uprising of 1948 was a grassroots rebellion that was fundamentally opposed to the general election backed by the US and the UN after the liberation of Korea from Japanese occupation, as the election was confined to regions south of the 38th parallel and played a critical role in dividing the peninsula. It lasted until 1949, eventually suppressed by the South Korean government and US military. Several people went missing or were murdered during the chaos. On July 10, an excavation project to uncover the remains of those that went missing was undertaken for the first time in nine years. The above photo shows surviving family members of the victims gathered near Jeju International Airport to mourn the unjust deaths of their loved ones.
