The Swinhoe's egret and the black-faced spoonbill, both classified as endangered bird species, have successfully bred on Baeknyeongdo Island in the Yellow (West) Sea. Both species had only been seen breeding on uninhabited islands before, according to the Ministry of Environment. The ministry announced on Apr. 9 that they had sighted 19 pairs of Swinhoe’s egrets and three pairs of black-faced spoonbills that had successfully bred on the island, indicating massive improvements in the island’s ecosystem.
