Gupo Livestock Market, the largest dog meat market in Busan, is shutting down after enduring years of criticism from animal rights groups. All 19 vendors have agreed to stop selling dog meat and clear out by July 11. One of the vendors, surnamed Noh, said, “This is all I’ve done for more than 40 years. I’m sure the city and district will provide some compensation, but I have no idea how I’m going to make a living from here on.” The Buk District Office has agreed to pay vendors 3.1 million won (US$2,658) every month until December 2020. Last October, Buk District Office decided to shut down the market and convert it into a pet park.
