The former US Army installation Camp Market in Incheon’s Bupyeong District has been opened to the public for the first time in 81 years. Originally established in 1939 as a Japanese munitions factory during the colonial era, it was repurposed as a US military base in 1945 after Japan’s defeat in the Pacific War. It now serves as a historical site that attests to the oppression of Koreans under imperial Japan. The space open to the public once served as the base’s outdoor sports fields. Camp Market is available for public viewing every day from 9 am to 5 pm. The city of Incheon will canvass public opinion on how to utilize the rest of Camp Market until the end of 2021.
