An appellate court in Seoul upheld a two-year prison sentence for South Gyeongsang Governor Kim Kyoung-soo, who has been charged with manipulating public opinion to favor President Moon Jae-in ahead of the 2017 presidential election. Kim was acquitted, however, of charges of offering a government position to a blogger referred to as “Druking” in return for posting material favorable to Moon. He was also found not guilty of violating the country’s election law, a conviction upheld by a lower court in January 2019, and the court decided not to revoke his bail. If the sentence is upheld by the Supreme Court, Kim will be stripped of his public title.
