UN Command (UNC) has approved civilian access to trails in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, and Paju, Gyeonggi Province, in relation to the South Korean government’s DMZ “peace trail” project, which involves converting the area along the DMZ into tourism zones designed to promote peace and reconciliation. The UNC approved civilian access to the border area near Goseong, Gangwon Province, on Apr. 23. A military official confirmed the approval of civilian access to Cheorwon and Paju on May 8, adding that all confirmation procedures with the UNC are now complete regarding the DMZ peace trail project. South Korea requires the approval of the UNC for projects that exceed the Southern Limit Line (SLL) according to the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953.
