It’s been discovered that South Korean marines at a guard post in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, misfired a K-6 machine gun toward North Korea on May 13. An apparent misfire from North Korea’s side of the DMZ occurred on May 3. To prevent further escalation based on miscommunication, some are calling for an inter-Korean communication line to discuss misfire incidents across the DMZ. On May 20, South Korean military authorities announced that the misfire was due to a non-commissioned officer accidentally firing the K-6 machine gun with his elbow during a routine inspection. Only one round was fired, which traveled toward the North but fell into the Han River. (Bong Bong-gyu, staff photographer)
