Protest at human rights ceremony

Kang Jae-kyung, head of an Incheon organization combating discrimination against people with disabilities and an award recipient designated to receive a Republic of Korea Human Rights Award to honor human rights groups this year, unfolds a sign upside down that reads, “Hyun Byung-chul should resign!”

Kang took out the sign after National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) Chairperson Hyun, left, awarded him the prize to at the ceremony for celebrating the 62nd anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Hotel President in Seoul, Dec. 10.

Next to him, Lee Sang-yoon, who was selected grand prize winner among students in the essay competitions, Somotu, president of Migrant Workers TV, winner of the Chairperson’s Commendation and Youngbok Girls’ High School senior Kim Eun-chong, who was selected grand prize winner in the essay competition for a piece on youth human rights, have refused the honors, charging that “the NHRCK and Chairperson Hyun are not qualified to give awards.”
