The international environmental group Greenpeace used a human statue modeled after the Greek goddess Themis in Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul on Sept. 12 to draw attention to nuclear power use in South Korea. The performance, featuring a human statue wearing a sign that says, “Safety,” took place one year after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the area around Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province. This region houses 18 of the country’s 24 nuclear power plants, and the purpose of the performance was to draw attention to the safety hazards that arise from having these plants in an area with an increased risk of seismic activity.
