The group’s new song was released as part of the CD single for “Butter.” The two songs share a similar dance pop mood, while “Permission to Dance” also features piano and string sounds.
Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Jenna Andrews and Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid co-wrote the song. Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid were also among the composers of Ed Sheeran’s 2017 hit “Shape of You.” This is the second time BTS has collaborated with Ed Sheeran, after their 2019 song “Make It Right.”
“Permission to Dance” conveys a message that anyone can dance as they please, with its lyrics saying, “We don’t need permission to dance.” Big Hit Music, the group’s label, said that BTS “wants to lift the mood of their fans after they have had a long day” with their latest single.
Per its message, the song's choreography is composed of moves that are easy to follow. Its music video features members of BTS dancing as they switch between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The teaser for the song that was released on Wednesday shows Suga, one of the members of BTS, reading a newspaper that reads, “2022 [is] the beginning of a new era[,] goodbye COVID-19.”
