A picture of 15 young North Koreans, taken in Beijing on Christmas Eve 2011, nine of whom were recently repatriated after being apprehended in Laos. The photo was released on May 30 by Suzanne Scholte, a North Korea human rights activist in Washington DC. She was involved in a project to get the North Koreans safely out of the North. Three are now in the US and three are in South Korea, as they are marked with black marker in the photo. (Yonhap News)

At a May 31 protest in front of the Laotian Embassy in Seoul’s Hannam neighborhood, human rights activists held signs criticizing the Laotian government’s recent decision to hand over nine North Korean defectors to North Korean authorities in Laos. The defectors had fled North Korea via China and are expected to face harsh punishment upon their return. (Newsis)
