Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor business earned more than 100 trillion won (US$74.7 billion) in operating profit in a single quarter for the first time, powering the company to its fourth consecutive record quarter as the spread of artificial intelligence drives up demand for chips and their prices.
In a regulatory filing Thursday, Samsung reported consolidated revenue of 195.3 trillion won (US$146 billion) and operating profit of 107.4 trillion won (US$80.3 billion) for the July-September period, up 126.9% and 783.1%, respectively, from the same period last year.
Compared with the previous quarter, revenue rose 13.9% and operating profit 20.1%.
The company’s Device Solutions Division, which oversees its semiconductor business, posted 106.5 trillion won (US$79.6 billion) in operating profit, accounting for roughly 99.2% of the company-wide total.
